Gema Espinoza, the STEM programs Outreach specialist, meets with students to discuss how the STEM program can help them meet their academic goals.

And that Help goes by the name Gema Espinoza.

Gema, Ventura College’s STEM Student Outreach Specialist, is in the front lines of both recruitment and articulation. On the recruitment side, she is responsible for identifying and retaining students with an interest in a STEM major. This includes current Ventura College students and recent High School graduates.

On the articulation side, Gema helps students monitor their academic status, identify their transfer requirements, and address deficiencies in their transfer applications.

Amongst all those tasks, Gema still finds time to answer questions from non-STEM students, interested parents, and other Colleges trying to increase STEM enrollment.

How can one person handle so much? Well, because she has been working in student outreach for years, that’s how! In fact, before coming to Ventura College, Gema worked in student outreach for UC Santa Barbara. For those STEM students seeking to transfer to UCSB, her knowledge of the UCSB counselors and their transfer requirements has been particularly helpful!

While Gema is clearly an indispensable member of the Ventura College family of students, staff, and faculty, it must also be mentioned that she is an involved member of our larger community. Gema raised over $3,300.00 to help battle cancer and, on October 18th, will participate in a marathon sponsored by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

So, we’d just like to take this opportunity to say, “Go Gema!”
